2010 Middle Tennessee Chapter Scholarship Winners Announced

The Scholarship Committee of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the ASSE has selected the 2010 scholarship winners.

“In addition to the Harold F. Polston and Keith Bain scholarships, we are very pleased to be able to award six more scholarships this year for a total of $10,000.
Each of these scholarship recipients have met the high academic and eligibility requirements along with excelling in a challenging curriculum of Occupational Safety and Health”, said Ron A. Kirsch, Ph.D., Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, congratulations to the winners!”

The $2,000 Harold F. Polston Harold F. Polston Scholarship was awarded to Lauren Hobbs of Murray State University. The $2,000 Keith Bain Scholarship was awarded to Jenna Lake of Murray State University.

The following students from Middle Tennessee State University and Murray State University will be awarded $1,000 scholarships:

The scholarships will be awarded at the Tennessee Safety & Health Congress on Monday, August 2nd at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro, TN.

2010 ASSE Middle Tennessee Chapter Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Committee of the ASSE Middle Tennessee Chapter announces the 2010 Scholarship Application. All applications must be completed, submitted, and postmarked by Monday, May 24, 2010. No exceptions.

The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the ASSE Scholarship Award & Selection Committee will review all applications. Scholarship recipient names will be posted on the Chapter’s website on or around July 1, 2010. Awards will be presented at the Tennessee Safety & Health Congress on Monday, August 2, 2010.

2010 Soft Tissue Injury Prevention Safety Stand Down

We are requesting your support and participation in an exciting safety event planned for the construction industry across the state of Tennessee for June 14th, 2010.

We have partnered with other construction trade associations across the state, as well as TOSHA to have a statewide construction “Soft Tissue Injury Prevention Safety Stand Down”. As you are probably aware, sprains, strains and other soft tissue injuries are the leading cause of injuries in our industry. We also generally see a rise in accidents during the summer months of June through August. As such, we are scheduling this event at the start of this high hazard time of year to emphasize the requirements surrounding this important topic.

Here’s how the program will work:

  1. Fill out the registration form and send it back to us so we can provide you with the following information electronically: Promo flyer and training information. We also want to be able to track the number of companies and employees impacted by the program.

  2. You will need to make copies of the powerpoint training program to distribute to your supervisors/foreman that will be leading the training program in the field. 
    (It is recommended you print the slides as handouts/2 slides per page.)

  3. On June 14th at 7:00 am you will “Stand Down” on all your jobsites to discuss soft tissue injury prevention utilizing the training information provided or another training program of choice.

  4. Suggestions for making the training most effective:

    1. If you are a subcontractor, try to get the GC involved so it can be a site wide program. If you are a GC, please include your subcontractors.

    2. Have employees interact during the training by providing feedback on the types of activities they perform that can result in these types of injuries. Have someone demonstrate the safe way to lift an object.

    3. Contact TOSHA to have one of their trainers perform the training
